ABOUT LITHUANIAN FORESTS:

According to the latest data of Forest Inventory and Management Institute, forest land area haved reached 2 009 000 ha or 30,78% of all territory of Lithuania by 1 January, 2000. Optimum forest coverage in Lithuania should reach 33-35%.

For comparison we present forest coverage in neighboring countries:
Latvia ~ 43 %,
Estonia ~ 47 %,
Poland ~ 27 %,
Belarussia ~ 36 % of territory.

Growing stock more than doubled during second half of 20th century. Forest area and growing stock per capita exceeds by about 30 % the average of Europe. Forest area is expanding because fellings are carried strictly according to annual allowable cut. It is likely that land unsuitable for agriculture will be afforested during the coming decades. Forests are overseen and managed according to the principles of stable and balanced forestry. They were started being certificated according to FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) system.

Private forests at the moment make ~ 19% of forestry area. However, in nearest decade private forest should make ~ 40-50% because of forests reserved for restitution.

Protected areas occupy 11,5% of the whole territory of Lithuania.
